Welcome to Our Pub

The Tollhouse Inn Lymington New Forest Hants - a friendly pub boasting all the traditional charms of New Forest pubsYour hosts Sally and Ivan Frend extend a very warm welcome to our small friendly Inn located at Buckland in the historic town of Lymington.

The Tollhouse is situated on the main A337 Southampton, Lyndhurst to Lymington Road. It was originally known as the Crown Inn, this name may have come from the Royal Crown of England or from its position on the crown of the hill. The earliest surviving deeds for the pub date back to 1795, but it was in existence prior to that.

The brewer Thomas Parker-Mew became involved with the pub in 1849, which later became part of the Hampshire estate of the Isle of Wight brewers Mew Langton who were based at the Royal Brewery in Newport. The estate was acquired by Strong & Co of Romsey in 1966 who were subsequently taken over by London brewers Whitbread in 1968.

The name of the pub was changed in 1978 to The Monkey House. This harked back to the 1870's when licensee Stephen Harris kept monkeys there as pets. They had a habit of pilfering money from the pockets of customers and as a result the pub was nicknamed 'The Monkey House'.

During the 1980's Whitbread made considerable improvements to the pub which was then renamed The Tollhouse Inn after the ancient turnpike tollgate situated just down the road.
